Uses
Due to its hygroscopic nature, [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide (DMAPS) can contain up to one molecule of water per monomer unit. This material should be stored in a cool, dry place and depending on the reaction conditions, water may need to be removed prior to polymerization.
Application
2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl (3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA) is a zwitterionic monomer. This compound can be used to synthesize poly(sulfobetain methacrylate) (p(SBMA)) hydrogels of micro dimensions by inverse suspension polymerization. P(SBMA)) hydrogels are highly resistant to nonspecific protein adsorption and cell adhesion in vitro and in vivo. P(SBMA)) hydrogels have various biological applications, such as inhibition of bacterial adhesion and low fouling properties[1].
General Description
[2-(Methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide (DMAPS) is a hygroscopic, zwitterionic monomer used in the synthesis of polysulfobetaines. Polysulfobetaines are electrically neutral polymers that contain both cationic and anionic groups within a single monomer unit and feature interesting properties such as antielectrolyte behavior in aqueous salt solutions, biocompatibility, and hemocompatibility. Based upon these properties, polysulfobetaines are useful in many biomedical applications such as drug delivery and drug formulation.
Synthesis
0.05 mol 1,3-propanesulfonic acid lactone and 10 g of acetonitrile were mixed homogeneously and added to a mixture of 0.05 mol dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and 10 g of acetonitrile, stirred at 25C for 12 h, and then left to stand for 36 h. The white precipitate obtained was filtered with acetonitrile and acetone by repeated pumping, centrifugation and rinsing to obtain 3-[N,N-dimethyl-[2-(2-methylprop-2-enoyloxy) ethyl]ammonium]propane-1-sulfonate inner salt.
