Hazard InformationBack Directory
[Description]

Cyperquat chloride is an obsolete broad-spectrum herbicide. Very little information is available regarding its environmental fate or ecotoxicology. It is highly toxic if ingested by mammals and may damage the central nervous system.
[Production Methods]

The commercial production process for cyperquat is not available in open literature. However, based on its structure and on standard industrial practice for quaternary ammonium herbicides, commercial production would have involved quaternization of a substituted pyridine precursor, typically methylating 4 phenylpyridine under controlled conditions to generate the pyridinium cation, followed by anion exchange to produce the marketed salt (e.g. chloride). The resulting technical grade material would then be purified and standardised before formulation.
[Mechanism of action]

Photosystem I (electron transport) inhibitor.
[Pesticide Type]

Herbicide
