Step 1: To a solution of 3,4-pyridinedicarboximide (3 g, 20.2 mmol, 1 eq.) in glacial acetic acid (30 ml) was added zinc powder (5.26 g, 81.0 mmol, 4 eq.). The reaction mixture was refluxed at 100 °C for 4 hours. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and the solvent was removed by evaporation. The pH of the reaction mixture was adjusted to 8 with aqueous NaHCO3 and subsequently extracted with chloroform. The aqueous layer was concentrated and again extracted with chloroform. All organic layers were combined, dried with Na2SO4 and the solvent was evaporated to give 2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyridin-1-one (1.7 g, 62% yield) as a peach-white solid.ESIMS: 135 (M++1). | [References]
