亮氨酸是一種可以在很多蛋白質(zhì)里發(fā)現(xiàn)的氨基酸，被認為是吸收多種不同營養(yǎng)素所必需的；可用于生化研究；亮氨酸可作為營養(yǎng)補充劑，很受運動員青睞；此外，亮氨酸還可作為食物添加劑，增強食品口味。
亮氨酸、異亮氨酸和纈氨酸都是支鏈氨基酸，它們有助于訓(xùn)練后肌肉的恢復(fù)，控制血糖，并給身體組織提供能量。其中，D-亮氨酸是最有效的一種支鏈氨基酸，但是人體自己不能生產(chǎn)，只能通過飲食獲得，但普通食品中幾乎不含D-亮氨酸，D-亮氨酸多出現(xiàn)在細菌的肽聚糖中。

In a screen of candidate neuronal receptors, D-leucine failed to compete for binding by cognate ligands, potentially suggesting a novel target. Even at low doses, D-leucine suppressed ongoing seizures at least as effectively as diazepam but without sedative effects. These studies raise the possibility that D-leucine may represent a new class of anti-seizure agents, and that D-leucine may have a previously unknown function in eukaryotes.
