Preparation by reaction of ethyl acetoacetate with 5-methyl-2-isopropyl-2-hexenal in the presence of pyridine and piperidine as catalysts in refluxing benzene (40%). The 5-methyl-2-isopropyl-2- hexenal was obtained by self-condensation of isovaleraldehyde in the presence of 15% potassium hydroxide solution.
