This tetrameric protein, also called ovomacroglobulin, inhibits proteinases of all four mechanistic classes. Ovostatin inhibits proteinases in a manner similar to a2-macroglobulin. Protease-catalyzed hydrolysis of a peptide bond in the susceptible region of the ovostatin polypeptide chain triggers a conformational change that hinders binding of macromolecular substrates, while remaining accessible to small synthetic substrates.
