Fifty years after the discovery of the insecticidal activity of parathion,
patented in 1944 by G. Schrader, organophosphorus compounds (OPs)
still form the largest single insecticide group with some 38% of worldwide
sales in 1996. Although newer and more specific insecticides are
beginning to erode their market share and their toxicology is becoming
increasingly under the spotlight it is worthwhile examining the reasons
for the success of this versatile group of compounds as it has much to do
with their mode of action, physical properties and metabolism.
