Chemische Eigenschaften
Gutta percha is a tough horny substance which is essentially non-elastic. It
is a crystalline material which can exist in two forms. As obtained from the
tree it is in the α-form (m.p. 65°C); rapid cooling of the melt gives the β-form
(m.p. 56°C). The β-form slowly reverts to the α-form.
Verwenden
Gutta percha has a lower water absorption
than natural rubber and is a good dielectric. On account of these
properties, gutta perch a was once used for underwater cable insulation but it
has now been displaced by newer materials.

The coagulated material consists of approximately equal amounts of high
trans-l,4-polyisoprene and resins.
