Gangliosides are a glycolipid extract of bovine cerebral cortex
claimed to ameliorate peripheral neuropathies of various types, including postherpetic
neuropathy, tobacco-alcohol amblyopia, toxic acoustic injuries, and
traumatic facial paralysis. Its use has been associated with cases of Guillain-Barr,
syndrome characterized by mixed polyneuropathy and in some instances, flaccid
paralysis.
