Description
1,2-Pentanediol, also known as 1,2-dihydroxypentane, is a colorless and odorless liquid which is miscible with water and polar organic solvents. It is a chiral molecule with one stereocenter. The compound is usually made by treating a mixture of 1-pentene and formic acid with hydrogen peroxide at<100 ℃. An optically active R-enantiomer of 1,2-pentanediol can be prepared by fermentation.

The density of 1,2-Pentanediol is 0.971 g/mL at 25°C, melting point is approximately 50.86°C, boiling point is 206-210°C, flash point is 104°C, and specific gravity is 0.97 at 20/20°C. Its refractive index is 1.44. It is a linear aliphatic diol with significant polarity and non-polarity, giving it unique properties distinct from other diols.
Uses
pentylene glycol is an alcohol with humectant and anti-bacterial properties.
Uses
1,2-Pentanediol is used in synthesizing quinoxalines from biomass-derived glycols. Also used in the synthesis of propiconazole (P770100) a fungicide as well as other antifungals.

Synthesis
Typically, 1,2-Pentanediol is produced by treating a mixture of 1-pentene and formic acid with hydrogen peroxide at temperatures below 100°C. Another method involves the hydroformylation of 1-butene followed by hydrogenation.
