Sodium mercaptopyruvate is an important mercaptopyruvate pathway intermediate during which cysteine of aspartate transaminase catalyses the transamination from cysteine to mercaptopyruvate and then mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase catalyzes the transsulfuration from mercaptupyruvate to pyruvate.
