| Uses | Benzyl Glycidyl Ether is widely used in electrical apparatus electromechanics and the machinery industry. Low viscosity can greatly lower the viscosity of epoxy resin. Decrease the viscosity of epoxy resin. | | Synthesis | Synthesis of benzyl glycidyl ether: To a stirred mixture of epichlorohydrin (2.0 g, 21.6 mmol), benzyl alcohol (2.12 g, 19.6 mmol) and tetrabutylam monium hydrogen sulphate (290 mg, 0.86 mmol) were added to 50% (w/v) aqueous NaOH (10 ml) drop wise at 0 °C and the reaction mixture was allowed to stir for 30 min at the same temperature. The stirring was con tinued for additional 4 h after which the mixture was extracted with diethyl ether. The ether-extract was washed with brine (2 × 10 ml), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel using a mixture of hexane: ether (6:1) as eluent to obtain an overall yield of 2.0 g (65%)[1]. | | References | [1] Neeraj Bala.
