Styrene
1. As a monomer of synthetic rubber and plastic, it is used to produce styrene-butadiene rubber, polystyrene, and foamed polystyrene.
2. It is also used to copolymerize with other monomers to produce a variety of different engineering plastics. Such as copolymerization with acrylonitrile and butadiene to obtain ABS resin, also used in household appliances and industry. 3. SAN made by copolymerization with acrylonitrile is an impact-resistant and bright-colored resin.
4. A small amount of styrene is also used as an intermediate for spices.
5. It can also be used as a hard monomer for the manufacture of styrene-acrylic emulsions and solvent-based pressure-sensitive adhesives, or a crosslinking monomer for unsaturated polyester resins.
