Ethyl o-chlorobenzoic acid was esterified with ethanol in sulfuric acid or p-toluene sulfonic acid to produce ethyl o-chlorobenzoic acid, and then condensed with phenylmagnesium bromide (Grignard reaction) to obtain (2-chlorophenyl) diphenylcarbinol magnesium salt, the latter was hydrolyzed with sulfuric acid to (2-chlorophenyl) diphenylcarbinol, and then chlorinated with thionyl chloride to produce the product.
