7-Ethyl-10-hydroxycamptothecin (SN-38) is a potent active metabolite of irinotecan, a chemotherapy drug. It belongs to the camptothecin class of compounds, known for their ability to inhibit DNA topoisomerase I, an essential enzyme in DNA replication.

Function
SN-38 exerts its anticancer effects by binding to and stabilizing the DNA-topoisomerase I complex, preventing the DNA from unwinding. This results in DNA damage, cell cycle arrest, and ultimately, cancer cell death. It is significantly more active than its precursor, irinotecan, in inhibiting tumor growth.

Applications
