Cobalt (III) oxide is the inorganic compound with the formula of Co2O3. Most commonly used in bleach. Although only two oxides of cobalt are well characterized, CoO and Co3O4, procedures claiming to give Co2O3 have been described. Thus treatment of Co(II) salts such as cobalt(II) nitrate with an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite (also known as bleach) gives a black solid. Some formulations of the catalyst hopcalite contain "Co2O3".
Properties: dark brown or gray-black crystalline powder. Density 5.18 g/cm3. Insoluble in water and alcohol, soluble in hot hydrochloric acid and hot dilute sulfuric acid and emit chlorine and oxygen respectively. It can be reduced to cobalt oxide by hydrogen at 125℃. It was reduced to cobalt oxide at 200℃ and cobalt oxide at 250℃. Cobalt oxide is decomposed at 895℃.
Application: Used to prepare cobalt and nickel - free cobalt salts. Used as pigment, ceramic glaze, etc. It can also be used as oxidant and catalyst.
