Arecoline lacks the typical parasympathomimetic effect of arecoline and can also affect the behavior of mice, reducing their autonomic activity and inquiry behavior. Studies have shown that arecoline and demethylarecoline have the activity of C-aminobutyric acid (GABA) reuptake inhibitors on rat brain sections. Another study using cat spinal cord sections showed that arecoline can enhance the inhibitory activity of GAGB and B-alanine, while demethylarecoline can increase the inhibitory activity of GAGB without affecting the activity of glycine. This study also found that arecoline had no effect on the activity of GAGB after intravenous injection, indicating that arecoline itself may not be able to act through the blood-brain barrier, and the effect of arecoline on the central nervous system may be through a transmitter system other than GAGB.
