Benzalkonium chloride (BKC/BAC) is a common quaternary ammonium compound used as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial preservative, antiseptic, and disinfectant in many products, including eye drops, nasal sprays, and cleaning solutions, working by disrupting microbial cell membranes. It's a surfactant and biocide effective against bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses, but chronic use, especially in eyes, can cause side effects like epithelial cell loss.

Uses

· Pharmaceuticals: Preservative in multi-dose eye, ear, and nasal drops, antiseptic in topical washes, and component in other formulations like inhaler solutions.

· Personal Care: Found in shampoos, creams, and wipes.

· Household/Industrial: Used in disinfectants, fabric softeners, and cleaning products.

· Acne Treatment: As a non-antibiotic alternative, it's used in cleansers and wipes to control C. acnes.
