Stable in cold water and cold alkaline aqueous solutions, it can be hydrolyzed to benzoic acid by boiling alkali metal carbonate and caustic alkali, reacts with ammonia or amine to form benzamide, reacts with alcohol to form benzoate, and can be reduced to benzyl alcohol by LiAlH4.
