Chloramphenicol is a very popular used antibiotic with a relatively simple structure. It was firstly isolated from cultures of Streptomyces venequelae in 1940's. But for now, Chloramphenicol is mainly produced synthetically. It was the 1st broad-spectrum anti-biotic discovered and approved by human being. DL-Chloramphenicol acts by suppressing bacteriostatic protein synthesis.
