Daminozide (CAS: 1596-84-5)

Primary Use:

A plant growth regulator, historically used to control vegetative growth and improve crop quality.

Function:

It works by inhibiting the biosynthesis of gibberellin, a primary plant hormone responsible for cell elongation, resulting in shorter, sturdier plants.

Key Applications & Effects:

Growth Retardation: Produces shorter, stronger stems in ornamental plants, trees, and fruit crops, preventing lodging (falling over).

Promotion of Flowering: Can induce and synchronize flower bud formation in certain plant species.

Improvement of Fruit Set: Enhances fruit retention and can lead to earlier fruit ripening in some cases.

Post-Harvest Management: Was used to improve the storage quality and firmness of fruits.

Important Note:

Due to health and environmental concerns, the use of Daminozide is banned or heavily restricted for food crops in many countries and regions, including the European Union and the United States. Its application is now largely limited to non-food plants like ornamental nursery stock.
