Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a sulfur-containing organic compound with a molecular formula of C2H6OS. It is a colorless, odorless and transparent liquid at room temperature. It is a hygroscopic flammable liquid. It has the characteristics of high polarity, high boiling point, good thermal stability, aprotic, and water miscibility. It is soluble in most organic substances such as ethanol, propanol, benzene and chloroform, and is known as "universal solvent".

1. Dimethyl sulfoxide is reduced to form methyl sulfide. It is oxidized to dimethyl sulfone by strong oxidant; 

2. When dimethyl sulfoxide is in contact with acid chlorides such as cyanuric chloride, benzoyl chloride, acetyl chloride, phenyliodoyl chloride, thionyl chloride, sulfuryl chloride, phosphorus trichloride, etc., a violent exothermic decomposition reaction occurs. Combined with nitric acid to generate (CH3)2SO·HNO3. The role of barium carbonate can regenerate dimethyl sulfoxide. It reacts with concentrated hydroiodic acid to generate dimethyl sulphur compounds. 3. Dimethyl sulfoxide is hygroscopic and needs to be dried before use.
