Ferric nitrate and ferric nitrate (III) are nitrates of iron (III) with the formula Fe(NO3)3·9H2O. It is a colorless to dark purple deliquescent crystal that can be prepared by reacting iron or iron oxide with nitric acid. Ferric nitrate catalyzes the reaction of liquid ammonia solution of sodium to form sodium amino:
2NH3 + 2Na → 2NaNH2 + H2
Similar to copper nitrate, ferric nitrate, which is loaded onto clay, is a useful oxidant in organic synthesis, oxidizing alcohols to aldehydes, mercaptans to disulfide. Gem dealers and metalworkers use iron nitrate to safely etch silver and silver alloys.
