What is Hexetidine?

Hexetidine is a broad-spectrum antiseptic belonging to the class of compounds known as amino pyridines. It is primarily used for its antibacterial and antifungal properties, particularly in the fields of oral care and otolaryngology (ENT). You will most commonly encounter it as the active ingredient in certain mouthwashes, throat sprays, and topical solutions.

Its key advantage is its substantivity, meaning it has the ability to bind to the oral mucosa (the skin inside the mouth) and slowly release over time, providing a prolonged antimicrobial effect.

Key Applications of Hexetidine

1. Oral Care and Treatment of Oropharyngeal Infections

This is its most significant and common area of use.

• Treatment of Gingivitis and Periodontitis: It is used to reduce dental plaque, prevent gum inflammation (gingivitis), and treat early stages of periodontal disease by controlling bacterial growth.

• Treatment of Mouth Ulcers (Aphthous Ulcers): Used as a mouthwash to disinfect canker sores and accelerate healing.

• Oral Thrush (Oropharyngeal Candidiasis): Its antifungal properties make it effective in treating fungal infections in the mouth, often seen in infants, denture wearers, or immunocompromised patients.

• Post-Dental Procedure Care: Used after tooth extractions, oral surgery, or scaling to prevent infection and promote healing.
