Itraconazole is an artificially synthesized triazole derivative and a synthetic broad?spectrum antifungal agent. Its antibacterial spectrum and mechanism of action are similar to clotrimazole, yet it possesses potent antifungal activity against Aspergillus. It exerts antifungal effects by altering the permeability of fungal cell membranes. It is active against pathogens causing both superficial and deep fungal infections, with a broader and stronger antifungal spectrum than ketoconazole. It inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, thereby producing antifungal effects.

This product inhibits dermatophytes (Trichophyton, Microsporum, Epidermophyton floccosum), yeasts (Cryptococcus neoformans, Malassezia, Candida species including Candida albicans, Candida glabrata and Candida krusei), Aspergillus, Histoplasma, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, Sporothrix schenckii, Fonsecaea, Cladosporium, Blastomyces dermatitidis, as well as various other yeasts and fungi. However, itraconazole cannot inhibit the growth of Rhizopus and Mucor.
