1. Product information

Lauric acid (dodecanoic acid)

Physical and chemical properties: white needle shaped crystals. Melting point 44.2 ℃, boiling point 298.9 ℃ (13.3kPa), 176 ℃ (2kPa), 141-142 ℃ (8-9.3) × 10-2kPa, relative density 0.8679 (50/4 ℃), refractive index 1.4304. Soluble in methanol, slightly soluble in acetone, petroleum ether, and water. There is a fragrance of laurel oil.

Production methods

Industrial production methods can be classified into two categories: one is obtained from natural plant oils through saponification or decomposition under high temperature and pressure;

The second is to separate from synthetic fatty acids. Japan mainly produces lauric acid from coconut oil and palm kernel oil as raw materials. Natural vegetable oils used to produce dodecanoic acid include coconut oil, litsea cubeba kernel oil, palm kernel oil, and mountain pepper kernel oil. Other plants, such as palm kernel oil, scrub tree seed oil, camphor tree seed oil, etc., can also serve the industry to produce dodecanoic acid. The C12 fraction remaining from the extraction of dodecanoic acid contains a large amount of dodecenoic acid, which can be hydrogenated at atmospheric pressure without the need for a catalyst. It can convert hydrocarbons to dodecanoic acid with a conversion rate of over 86%.


Purpose

Dodecanoic acid has the most extensive use in the surfactant industry, and according to the classification of surfactants, there are cationic, anionic, non-ionic, and amphoteric types. Some surfactants derived from dodecanoic acid and dodecanol are also disinfectants and fungicides, such as dodecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride (Jieermei), dodecyldimethylbenzylammonium bromide (XinJieermei), and dodecyldimethyl-2-phenoxyethyl ammonium bromide (Dumifen). The dodecyldimethylammonium 2,4,5-trichlorophenol salt in these derivatives can be used as a citrus preservative.

Dodecanoic acid has many uses in plastic additives, food additives, spice industry, and pharmaceutical industry.

3. Used as a softener, plasticizer, and stabilizer for preparing alkyd resins, polyesters, wetting agents, powder coatings, spray paints, and plastics.

4. Raw materials used in the production of soap, detergents, cosmetic surfactants, and chemical fiber oils.
