Malononitrile is the raw material for the preparation of 2-amino-4,6-dimethoxypyrimidine and 2-chloro-4,6-dimethoxypyrimidine;
can be used to produce Sulfonylureas herbicides such as bensulfuron-methyl , pyrazosulfuron-methyl, etc.,
can also be used to make the herbicide bispyribac;
used in medicine to make diuretic drugs, synthesize a series of important drugs such as vitamin B1, aminopterin, and triamterene,etc..
