Sodium cyanate is white or off-white crystalline powder, easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in liquid chlorine and benzene, ethanol, ether and other organic solvents. It is stable in the dry state, but easily hydrolyzes in hot water to produce ammonium carbonate, sodium carbonate and urea. It also decomposes when heated above 500°C.
