Tannic acid powder which are found in many plants. Tannic acid refers to tannins that can be dissolved in water, as opposed to the other type, or condensed tannins. According to Cornell University Department of Animal Science, tannins are a group of compounds known as plant polyphenols, which cause proteins to bind and form complexes. Tannins are found in many of the foods you eat, including fruits, teas, wine and edible grasses.

Tannic acid is also known as tannic acid and gallate tannic acid. The structure is still unknown, but it is generally thought to be an ester of five hydroxyl groups of glucose combined with gallic acid gallic group.After extraction and concentration of gallnut, tannic acid can be prepared for industrial use. After refining, it can be made into medicinal or reagent tannic acid. Tannic acid is light yellow amorphous powder or glossy scaly or spongy solid. No special smell, bitter, astringent. Gradually darkening by exposure to air and sunlight. Soluble in cold water, in hot water can dissolve indefinitely; Soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone and ethyl acetate, insoluble in benzene, ether, chloroform, petroleum ether and carbon disulfide. Tannic acid in aqueous solution is weakly acidic, easy to oxidize, oxidize faster in alkaline solution, the solution color is darker. In case of trivalent iron ion, the solution is blue black, and white gelatin, alkaloid interaction produces precipitation. It reacts with lead, aluminum, zinc, germanium and other metal ions to form multinuclear complexes, insoluble salts with special colors. Tannic acid was mainly used as a mordant in dyeing. It was also used to produce gallic acid and coke gallic acid.

Tannic acid was also used to produce leather tanning agents, rubber agglutinating agents, protein and alkaloid precipitators, and reagents for the determination of beryllium, aluminum, nickel, copper and other metals.
