Industrial applications

Titanium dioxide is an important white pigment and porcelain glaze. It is used in paint, ink, plastic, 

rubber, paper, chemical fibre, watercolour pigment and other industries. Titanium dioxide used as 

pigment in the world, more than hundreds of thousands of tonnes a year. Titanium dioxide can be

added to paper to make the paper white and opaque, therefore, banknote paper and fine art paper 

to add titanium dioxide.

Titanium dioxide is also sometimes added to make plastics lighter in colour and to make rayon softer.

In the rubber industry, titanium dioxide is also used as a filler for white rubber.

Ultrafine titanium dioxide has excellent UV light shielding and transparency. 

It is widely used in cosmetics, wood protection, food packaging plastics, durable household films, 

synthetic and natural fibres, and transparent coatings. The special optical effect in metal flash coatings

 has led to its importance and application in premium car paints.Zhang et al [36] prepared a film 

capable of effective UV shielding by adding poly(dopamine)-modified titanium dioxide nanoparticles 

into polylactic acid.Hong et al [37] added titanium dioxide nanoparticles to the preparation 

of polyurethane microcapsules, and the material's mechanical properties and thermal stability were both

 improved and can effectively shield UV radiation and can be used as an exterior coating.Mohr 

et al [38] added titanium dioxide to make packaging materials to shield UV radiation on the basis of 

ensuring the biodegradability of biofilm.
