Lithium chloride (LiCl, CAS 7447-41-8) is an ionic compound widely utilized as a selective precipitant for RNA isolation in molecular biology research. Due to its physicochemical properties, LiCl preferentially precipitates RNA while generally not interacting appreciably with DNA, proteins, or polysaccharides. Researchers commonly employ LiCl precipitation to purify intact, translationally active RNA from complex samples, including those containing translation inhibitors or synthesized cDNA. Additionally, LiCl-mediated RNA precipitation following guanidine thiocyanate homogenization enables rapid, scalable purification of large mRNA species up to 10 kb, benefiting workflows by avoiding ultracentrifugation steps.
