Deuterium oxide is a deuterated solvent, often used in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance analyses, in which it facilitates the dissolution of internal standard and sample in quantification experiments. It can also be used to dissolve tris(2,2′-bipyridyl)dichlororuthenium(II) hexahydrate Ru(bpy)3. It is also often used to prepare trifluoroacetic acid-d, and as a deuteration agent for primary and seconday alcohols.
