It binds to the serotonin transporter and prevents it from transporting serotonin back into the presynaptic cell, thereby increasing the level of free serotonin in the synapse. 2-Acetyl-3-methylbenzo[b]thiophene has been shown to have high affinity for 5HT1A receptor, as well as substituents that are capable of binding to this receptor. This drug also has an antidepressant effect by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin.
