5-Propyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione is a drug that acts as an allosteric modulator of metabotropic glutamate receptors. It has been shown to inhibit the binding of glutamate to its receptor, leading to an increase in the level of extracellular glutamate. This effect can be reversed by addition of a competitive antagonist such as kynurenic acid. 5-Propyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione has been used for the treatment of dyskinesia and for the immobilization of animals for fluorescence microscopy studies. It has also been used to study receptor subtypes by modifying the chemical moiety at position 5 on the acridone ring. The optimization of this chemical moiety may lead to future improvements in 5-propyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione's efficacy and specificity as a drug candidate.
