Daptomycin is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.This medication is not recommended for use in children younger than 12 months due to possible risk of serious side effects.

Uses of Daptomycin

Daptomycin injection is used to treat certain blood infections or serious skin infections caused by bacteria in adults and children 1 year of age and older. Daptomycin injection is in a class of medications called cyclic lipopeptide antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

Antibiotics such as daptomycin injection will not work for treating colds, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.

Use daptomycin injection until you finish the prescription, even if you feel better. If you stop using daptomycin injection too soon or skip doses, your infection may not be completely treated and the bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics.

Side Effects of Daptomycin

Nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping, increased sweating, or pain, redness, swelling at the injection site may occur.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, unusual tiredness, signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine), signs of a lung infection (such as cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, new, unexplained fever), numbness, tingling of arms/legs, swelling hands/ankles/feet, mental/mood changes (such as anxiety).

This medication may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition due to a bacteria called C. difficile. This condition may occur during treatment or weeks to months after treatment has stopped. Tell your doctor right away if you develop: diarrhea that doesn't stop, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, blood/mucus in your stool.

If you have these symptoms, do not use anti-diarrhea or opioid products because they may make symptoms worse.
