SMAP-18 is a polypeptide composed of 18 amino acids, which is a truncated form of SMAP-29 and a polypeptide composed of 18 amino acids. Sheep marrow antimicrobial peptide-29 (SMAP-29) exhibits extremely high antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, other Gram negative bacteria, and multidrug-resistant pathogens. Compared to its parent SMAP-29, SMAP-18 exhibits higher cell selectivity as it reduces hemolytic activity while retaining antibacterial activity.
