Vedolizumab is a humanized IgG1 kappa monoclonal antibody designed for the treatment of moderate to severe active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). It specifically targets the α4β7 integrin on the surface of lymphocytes, blocking its interaction with mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1 (MAdCAM-1) expressed on gut vascular endothelium. This gut-selective mechanism inhibits lymphocyte migration into intestinal tissues, thereby reducing local inflammation while minimizing systemic immunosuppression.
