Ginseng, Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, is a well-known Chinese traditional medicine. There have been more than 300 original papers in Chinese and in English during the last 10 years in China,and more around the world.
1.Previous studies, including research from the University of Toronto, have shown that Panax ginseng may lower blood glucose in conditions associated with diabetes.
2.In a study at the Minnesota Mayo Clinic, terminal cancer patients taking a higher daily dosage of ginseng reported less weakness and fatigue than those taking lower dosages or placebos.
3.Other experiments indicate possible beneficial effects on immune function due to its anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
4.Results from scientific research on the health benefits of Asian ginseng remain inconclusive to date. The contradictory data from different studies may be attributed to varying types and quality of ginseng being analyzed. Few extensive clinical trials on Asian ginseng have been conducted. Most studies have been selective, lack statistical analysis, or have flaws in experimental design.
5.Some previous studies were only conducted with animal subjects. For example, ginseng appears to inhibit cancer-related characteristics in animal models, but this effect is unclear in humans. Southern Illinois University School of Medicine found that Asian and American ginseng enhances sexual libido and activity in lab animals.

This review paper summarizes some achievements from some of these published papers. Twenty-eight ginsenosides and some minor constituents were extracted and isolated from the root, root-stock, stems, leaves, flowers and flower-buds of ginseng.
The chemical analysis demonstrated that the content of ginsenosides is related to the source, part and growth years of ginseng. The drug has a wide range of pharmacological and therapeutical actions, it acts on the central nervous system, cardiovascular system and endocrine secretion, promotes immune function and metabolism, possesses biomodulation action, anti-stress and anti-ageing activities, and so on. Many preparations of ginseng have been officially approved for clinical application in China. Clinical evaluation has shown that these preparations play a special role in medicinal use.
