A solid-state substitute for gaseous acetylene—calcium carbide
Jul 20,2026
Calcium carbide (CAS 75-20-7), with the chemical formula CaC2, serves as a safer and greener solid alternative to traditional gaseous acetylene. Unlike acetylene gas—which is flammable, explosive, and requires high-pressure equipment—CaC2 is non-flammable, non-toxic, and easy to weigh and handle.
Chemical Reactions Involving Calcium Carbide
CaC2 is a versatile reagent that can be readily converted into building blocks containing carbon-carbon bonds. It can be used in the following reactions:
(1) Synthesis of propargyl alcohols from CaC2
Directly combining CaC2 and H2O in a reaction vessel releases acetylene, which subsequently reacts with aldehydes or ketones in the presence of Cs2CO3 or tetrabutylammonium fluoride. This method yields a series of secondary and tertiary alcohols, including derivatives with steroid backbones. Interestingly, when acetone reacts with CaC2 in the presence of a base at 200–300 °C, the products formed are aromatic hydrocarbons and phenols rather than propargyl alcohol.

(2) Cross-Coupling Reactions
CaC2 can participate in coupling reactions such as Sonogashira and Suzuki couplings to construct more complex aryl-substituted alkynes.

(3) Nucleophilic Addition to Produce Alkenyl Derivatives
Nucleophilic addition of alcohols, thiols, selenols, and aromatic NH compounds to calcium carbide-derived acetylene yields a variety of O-, S-, Se-, and N-vinyl derivatives with yields of up to 99%.

(4) Heterocycle Construction
CaC2 can be used to synthesize various heterocyclic compounds, such as pyrazoles, isoxazoles, triazoles, pyrroles, and quinoxalines.

Sustainable Carbon Cycle
The production process for CaC2 involves heating CaO with a carbon source. When calcium carbide reacts with water to release acetylene, calcium hydroxide is produced as a byproduct; this can be reused to manufacture calcium carbide. Reaction pathway: CaO + C → CaC2 → Acetylene → Organic products → Elemental carbon (recovered) → CaC2 reproduction, forming a closed carbon cycle.
