The effect of adenosine on adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) is bidirectional, depending on the type of adenosine receptor it binds to. When adenosine binds to A? or A? receptors, it inhibits cAMP production, leading to decreased cAMP levels; conversely, when it binds to A?A or A?B receptors, it stimulates cAMP production, leading to increased cAMP levels. Therefore, adenosine can both increase and decrease intracellular cAMP levels, thereby precisely regulating a variety of physiological functions.
