Is carbon tetrachloride a refrigerant?
Jul 3,2026
No. Carbon tetrachloride does not have any refrigerating properties in its own right, and its use has been banned due to its extremely high ozone-depleting potential and its toxicity to the liver and kidneys. However, carbon tetrachloride is a key precursor in the synthesis of next-generation refrigerants (hydrofluoroolefins, HFOs). HFOs are a new class of synthetic refrigerants with a low global warming potential (GWP). They do not deplete the ozone layer and have an extremely low GWP value (close to 0).
