Phenol is a corrosive and irritant substance to human skin. Moderate to high concentrations cause rapid protein denaturation and cellular destruction upon contact, leading to redness, burning pain, blistering, and chemical burns; repeated low-level exposure may result in chronic dryness, scaling, pruritus, and compromised barrier function. Absorbed phenol can enter the systemic circulation, potentially inducing arrhythmia, hypotension, respiratory depression, and hepatorenal injury. Although high-concentration phenol is occasionally employed in deep chemical peels under strict medical monitoring, such use carries significant cardiac and hepatic risks and is increasingly obsolete; industrial-grade phenol or any unsupervised application is strictly hazardous and may cause severe irreversible damage.
