Boron tribromide (BBr3) is a colorless, fuming liquid widely used in pharmaceutical synthesis, photovoltaic manufacturing, and as a dopant in semiconductor manufacturing. The purity of this compound is crucial in terms of trace metal contamination, as even minute amounts of impurities can have a significant impact on the function of semiconductor circuits. Therefore, only high-purity BBr3 molecules can be used in semiconductor production [1].
Lewis Structure of BBr3
Boron tribromide (BBr3) is a nonpolar molecule. Its Lewis structure consists of a central boron atom (B) and three outer bromine atoms (Br). The boron atom (B) is bonded to each of the three bromine atoms (Br) by single bonds, and each bromine atom (Br) carries three pairs of lone electrons (see figure below).
