In the AlH4- ion of aluminium hydride, hydrogen atoms are arranged in a tetrahedral fashion around the Al3+ ion. This is due to the coordination of hydride (H-) ions to the Al3+ ions. The structure also features Li+ centres surrounded by five AlH4- tetrahedra. The Li+ centres are bonded to one hydrogen atom from each of the surrounding tetrahedra, forming a bipyramid arrangement. The aluminum atom in LiAlH4 possesses electron-deficient characteristics, allowing it to act as a Lewis acid.
