Patchouli oil is a natural essential oil extracted from the Lamiaceae plant patchouli through steam distillation.As an important aromatic and moisturizing medicine in traditional Chinese medicine, the global patchouli oil market has been in short supply for a long time. The annual demand is about 1,400-1,600 tons, while the supply that meets international standards is only 1,000-1,200 tons [3]. As the world's largest producer of patchouli oil, Indonesia once supplied 80%-90% of global demand. However, in recent years, the output of its main production area, Aceh Province, has declined significantly due to low production efficiency [3].

Chemical composition

Anti-allergic effect: In the passive skin allergic reaction (PCA) experiment, patchouli oil (20, 40, 80 mg/kg) in each dose group can significantly inhibit the increase in vascular permeability of rat skin (p<0.01) [1]. In the Schultz-Dale reaction experiment in guinea pig ileum, patchouli oil (0.01, 0.02, 0.04 mg/mL) significantly inhibited ovalbumin-induced smooth muscle contraction (p<0.01) [1]. In addition, in the DNCB-induced delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) experiment, all dosage groups of patchouli oil significantly reduced ear swelling in mice (p<0.01) [1].

Antibacterial effect: Yang et al. double verified the antibacterial activity of patchouli oil through molecular docking technology and in vitro antibacterial experiments. Molecular docking studies have shown that various compounds in patchouli oil can act on multiple targets such as bacterial cell wall synthesis (PBPs), folic acid metabolism (DHPS, DHFR), DNA replication (DNA gyrase), and protein synthesis (RNA polymerase), showing a "multiple elastics" synergistic antibacterial mode [2]. In vitro experiments show that patchouli oil exhibits good antibacterial and bactericidal activity against six common pathogenic bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus (MIC value is between 2.0-7.5 mg/mL) [2].
