N,N-dimethylacetoacetamide is a clear, colorless to yellow liquid used as a general purpose, low color generating co-promoter for many unsaturated polyester (FRP) resin formulations. It is also used in the production of low VOC unsaturated polyester (FRP) systems for coatings and as an intermediate for the production of insecticides. N,N-dimethylacetoacetamide (DMAAm) is a β-dicarbonyl compound used as an industrial intermediate.

Synthesis Method

Dissolve dimethylamine (5.00 ml, 2.00 M, 10.0 mmol, 2.0 eq.) in toluene (15 ml).

Add diketene acetone adduct (0.670 ml, 5.00 mmol, 1.0 eq.) to the solution dropwise over a period of 5 minutes.

Stir the reaction at room temperature for 15 minutes.

Stir the mixture under reflux for 12 hours.

Cool the mixture to room temperature and remove the solvent in vacuo.

Purify the crude product by FC (EtOAc) to obtain N,N-dimethyl-3-oxobutanamide.
