When dichloroethane enters the body through the respiratory system and skin, it is metabolized into highly toxic 2-chloroacetaldehyde. Long-term occupational exposure has been shown to cause toxic encephalopathy (brain damage), leading to cognitive problems, memory impairment, and tremors.
