N,N-Diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA) is a commonly used sterically hindered tertiary amine organic base in organic synthesis, often used as an acid-binding agent in various condensation and substitution reactions. Although it and triethylamine both belong to the class of organic tertiary amines, their structures differ significantly. DIPEA has greater steric hindrance, weaker nucleophilicity, fewer side reactions, and is more mild and stable, making it suitable for high-precision synthesis scenarios such as peptide synthesis and pharmaceutical intermediates. Triethylamine, on the other hand, has less steric hindrance and stronger nucleophilicity, but is more prone to causing unnecessary side reactions. However, it is cheaper and more cost-effective, making it more suitable for routine basic organic reactions and a more widely used general-purpose acid-binding agent in laboratories.
