Steps:

Pyrene (1 g, purity 98%) was refluxed in hot HNO₃ (80 ml) at 80 °C and stirring for 12 h. After cooled to room temperature, the mixture was diluted with deionized water (500 mL) and then filtered to obtained yellow 1,3,6-trinitropyrene as first product.
