Stage #2:epichlorohydrin in water at 25; for 16.5 h;

A solution of sodium hydroxide (100 g, 2.5 mol) in water (200 mL) was added over 10 min to benzyl alcohol (400 g, 3.9 mol). The mixture was cooled to 25 0C, and then epichlorohydrin (100 g, 1.08 mol) was added with rapid stirring over 30 min. Vigorous stirring was continued for 16 h. The mixture was then diluted with water (1000 mL) and extracted with toluene (3x500 mL). The toluene extract was washed with water (500 mL), dried over Na2SC>4 and evaporated to an oil, which was distilled to yield 150 g (50%) of 1,3-di-O-benzylglycerol, bp 155°C (0.5 mm).
